If you are unable to use the Obituary Finder, here is a list of resources you can search
Step 1: Try searching online
Rochester Post Bulletin (1989-present)
Note: The PB website is often difficult to search. Try putting quotes around the name you are searching for.
Rochester Post Bulletin | NewsBank (2006-present)
Access inside library or outside with Library Card and PIN
Minnesota Digital Newspaper Hub
Search Rochester papers from 1859-1925
Winona Newspaper Database
Search Winona papers from 1855-1976
Step 2: Find the article date & page or date of death
Indexes from History Center of Olmsted County
Search the various indexes by name to find the article date and page. This will help when browsing microfilm.
I know the date of death/article date:
Visit the library (2nd floor) to search microfilm for the Post Bulletin (1925-present) and earlier Rochester newspapers (1859-1925). We can help you use the machines.
I do NOT know the date of death/article date:
A date of death is recommended since you have to browse one page at a time. Search the resources below for a date.
Minnesota People Records Search (1904-2001)
Minnesota Death Search (1997-present)
First name, last name, AND birth date or social security number are required
Social Security Death Index (1936-2007)
A database of people whose deaths were reported to the Social Security Administration. For access to expanded records from 2007-2014, try searching Ancestry.com (in-library use only).
Step 3: Browse microfilm at Library
Microfilm is available on the 2nd floor for the Post Bulletin (and earlier Rochester newspapers) from 1858 to the current year. Staff are happy to teach you to use the machines.
There is no way to search the microfilm, so an article date, death date, or close approximation is needed.
